Open Position: Mechanic

Summary
This position oversees and perform general repair, mechanical and maintenance work on District vehicles and equipment, and perform a variety of duties to support the overall mosquito control operations of the District.

Essential Duties
Inspect, repair, and perform maintenance on District vehicles and equipment.
Maintain and utilize fleet maintenance electronic data bases of repairs completed on vehicles and equipment.
Calibrate ULV spray equipment as needed.
Maintain and manage appropriate inventory levels of fleet maintenance parts.
Develop and maintain a preventative maintenance program for all District equipment.
Work closely with the Operations Manager in developing a feasible five-year plan for the maintenance, repair and replacement of District vehicles and equipment.
Manage the bid search process for new equipment, vehicles and/or parts needed to maintain the District’s fleet of equipment/vehicles and present several options to the Operations Manager with a recommendation for which option for the Operations Manager should present to management.
Download data from vehicle GPS tracking units to track application of product by trucks.
Submit a complete and accurate daily report.
Perform other projects and duties as assigned.
Attend safety and technical training session.
Perform additional work as required.

Secondary Duties
Conduct a variety of minor maintenance work on District facilities.
Maintain level of understanding on all aspects of principles and practices of mosquito control in keeping with the mosquito control problems inherent to the area through on the job training as needed.
Conduct adulticide spray missions for mosquitoes at night or early in the morning, as need arises.
Apply pesticides for larval mosquito control.
Assist in the arbovirus surveillance activities & maintenance of coop sites & sentinel birds.

Performance Requirements
Understand and follow oral and written instructions.
Ability to use computers (tablets) and company cell phones to run software and mapping.
Recognize safety hazards in the workplace and take precautionary measures to protect self and others.
Proper handling and spill prevention of hazardous materials.
Ability to mix, load and apply pesticides in containers weighing up to 50 lbs. according to label specifications and established standards.
Ability to tolerate exposure to hazardous control materials, venomous insects, vectors and vector-borne diseases, rough terrain, inclement weather conditions, vicious animals, poisonous plants & animals.
Establish and maintain effective working relationship with co-workers, supervisors, and the public. Ability to handle irate public in a calm and collective manner.
Physically capable of performing assigned duties and work outdoors, occasionally under adverse weather conditions.
Must maintain a clean and well-organized shop and service vehicle.
Must be able to carry 35 lbs. backpack through wet and uneven terrain.
Must be able to lift 50 lbs. daily.

Experience and Training Requirements
Prior experience in mosquito control or a related field, a plus but not required.
High School Diploma or equivalent GED.
Valid Florida driver’s license and good driving record. A three-year driving record will be requested at time of hired. CDL a plus.
Four (4) years of experience in maintenance and repair automotive, and/or other engine powered public works equipment.
Proficient knowledge of general vehicle and equipment mechanics and an ability to use and operate a variety of hand tools and diagnostic equipment.
Experience with 12v electrical DC systems a plus.
Experience with fabrication and/or welding a plus.
Ability to read, understand and follow oral and written instructions in English.
Participate fully in training opportunities provided to enhance knowledge and to meet requirements for licensing. 

Working Environment
Work is performed in a shop setting and outdoors, exposing employee to inclement weather, noise, fumes, construction environments, slippery or uneven surfaces and traffic hazards. Employees are required to use appropriate safety equipment and follow standard safety practices. Occasional local, regional, and national travel may be required. Noise level is usually low but occasional exposure to loud and moderate noise levels when around trucks, equipment, pony motors and a variety of other motors and engines. Working with and around chemicals, which are stored, handled, applied/used, and disposed of according to exact labeling instructions, is required. Exposure to moving mechanical parts, mud, fuel, fumes, snakes, and insects may be required.

Physical Requirements
Physical activity may be required including lifting, reaching for, pulling, and carrying up to fifty pounds and climbing in and out of vehicles and a variety of other equipment. Must be able to use hands and fingers to type. Excellent vision, both close and distance, is regularly required.
